Tell me about yourself.
MW: My name is Meagan Jade Washington, also known as Meagz to my family and friends. I am a twenty year old Bronx native currently attending North Carolina Central University as a full time student majoring in Elementary Education with a focus in Literature. I have plans of farthing my education by obtaining Masters Degrees in both special education and administrative leadership.
How would you define your personal style?
MW: I would have to best define my personal style as being edgy and versatile. I switch up my looks daily, firstly, because I tend to get bored very easily and also because I enjoy standing out of a crowd. I like to have fun with what I wear. Most of the time my ensemble is based on the weather or the mood a song puts me in. I take pride in what I choose to wear because I do it for myself rather than for a response from peers or people on my social media accounts. I'll be layered in a gray hoody, denim jacket and navy trench with a pair of black riding pants and Nike runs one day. The next day I'll play it really girly with a detailed blazer, sharp white button down, boyfriend-fit jeans, and a pair of J.Crew flats. I guess the best way to summarize it up would be by calling it spontaneous inspiration.
How do you stay updated with all things fashion?
MW: I wouldn't say I really stay updated with trends constantly . At most, I follow a couple of my favorite brands social media accounts such as: Alexander Wang, Rebecca Minkoff, Ralph Lauren, J.Crew, Kith, Atrium, Madewell, Maxazria and Hypebeast, just to name a few. I also have subscriptions to Vogue and Elle magazine. I think glancing at trends is a vital part of preventing yourself from appearing generic.
Who is your current favorite fashion/style icon?
MW: The Song sisters have to be my fave fashion icons at the moment. Aimee provides the classy casual, while Dani has a more chill urban appearance. I enjoy seeing the pieces they put together because they aren't predictable, and coordinate extremely well. They provide the originality a lot of people lack when getting dressed.
What is your earliest fashion memory?
MW: Growing up in a house with three older sisters and my mother, my fondest fashion memory would have to be going shopping almost everyday of the week and then watching my mother lay out her ensemble for the next day of work. Her attention to every detail aided in my understanding of the influence one's appearance has on how others perceive you, as well as, how you will be treated.
List a few of your closet must haves.
MW: A few major must haves for the fall/winter are a wide selection of hoodies and trenches varying from the colors of gray, black, navy, or salt and pepper, a durable leather jacket, a denim and varsity jacket, tons of boyfriend fit jeans, turtle necks, and lastly a couple great pairs of shades. These are essential for the fall/winter seasons because they look great worn alone and even better when layered!
What is fashion to you?
MW: Fashion, in my opinion, is a means of self expression. It allows people to gain an idea of your personality from a distance. It's the one thing you can count on to pick you up and motivate you to get through the day. When you look good you feel great.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
MW: In five years, I see myself getting settled in my career, and moving into a place of my own. I have plans of doing a lot of traveling and experiencing new worldly things. Ultimately, in five years, I see myself being a successful black woman strengthening the education of children in urban neighborhoods, while maintaining that same versatile and edgy sense of style.
