Tell me about yourself.
Celeste: My name is Celeste van Joost, 23 years old, living in the Netherlands. I studied journalism and specialized myself as a fashion journalist. I've just started Celmatique as my own company, which is a blog, but the website and web-shop will go live before the end of this year! I'm very excited.
You are definitely no stranger to bright colors and prints. Did you always have a colorful sense of style or did it develop over time?
Celeste: Actually, I always did! With my mom being a fashion designer, my interest in fashion started at an early age. Back then I was also really into dancing and I got a lot of inspiration from the artists and music I used to listen to; De La Soul and Kelis for example. Later on I was inspired a lot by M.I.A. and... My brother! There were days I just stole his jeans, tee's or sweaters. Walking around in his Stüssy gear. I also liked the most colorful printed vintage 90's leggings; remember those? Haha. Yeah, I always loved to go crazy with prints and colors.
How would you describe your personal style?
Celeste: It's kind of funky and cheerful, mostly loose fits, but always has a feminine touch to it. I would never dress all black, unless it's for a special occasion. You'll always catch me with a little touch of color or a print.
I hope that you enjoyed your recent trip to NYC! How are the trends and styles in the Netherlands different from what you've seen in New York?
Celeste: Ah, I did! Thank you for asking. NYC was amazing. It's one of the most inspiring city's I've ever been to. But when it comes to fashion, I haven't seen huge differences between the trends in NYC and NL. What I did notice is that there are different hypes going on in the Netherlands. For example, the all the way black on black thingy, it seems like it's been going on for quite some time now and the long T-shirts that boys wear, so it kind of looks like they are wearing dresses. NYC is more evolving when it comes to hypes and they go by faster than in the Netherlands. Holland get's a little bit stuck sometimes, in my opinion. But over all, the fashion scene in Holland is on point.
What is your earliest fashion memory?
Celeste: Haha, I remember when I was like 5 or 6 years old, my parents loved to put me in one particular matching set, consisting of shorts and a T-shirt. It was bright pink and had a colorful print with orange and green on it. I can't remember what the print was exactly but I do know that it was my favorite outfit when I was mini (and also that of my parents apparently). Good memories.
